Measure PDF Drawings in Real-World Units

Use the PDF measure tool in Foxit PDF Editor to check distances, perimeters, and areas on construction plans and CAD drawings saved as PDFs. Calibrate the scale, snap to drawing points, and export your results for takeoff reports.

Measure tools require a PDF that permits measuring.

Measure, check, and reuse

Keep Drawing Measurements and Results Together

Work from the PDF drawing you already have open. Set the scale, mark the dimensions you need, and carry the results into your next report.

Measure in Real-World Units

Use an embedded scale or calibrate a known distance so the drawing reports the units your project needs.

Align Measurements with Drawing Points

Snap to endpoints, midpoints, paths, and intersections to help position measurement points precisely.

Reuse Results in Takeoff Reports

Keep measurement markups with the drawing and export the measurement information as a CSV file.

Start with the right scale

Turn Page Distances into Project Dimensions

A line's length on a PDF page is only useful for takeoffs when you know what it represents. Calibrate against a known dimension, then check the scale on each drawing before measuring.

Check the Drawing

  • Identify a dimension with a known real-world length.
  • Check whether the page includes a usable embedded scale.
  • Confirm the scale for each sheet or drawing area.

Measure at the Right Scale

  • Use the document scale or set a custom ratio.
  • Measure in the units your project requires.
  • Review results against known drawing dimensions.
Simple process

Measure a Drawing in Three Steps

Move from a known dimension to measurements you can review and export.

1

Calibrate the Scale

Use the PDF's embedded scale, or select Calibrate in the Format tab. Mark a line with a known length and enter its actual measurement and unit.

2

Measure the Drawing

Choose a Measure tool in the Comment tab. Place your points on the drawing and use snapping where the PDF provides suitable paths.

3

Review and Export Results

Check the measurement, add a label, and keep the markup on the PDF. Choose Export to Excel to save measurement information as a CSV file.

Measure Lengths and Areas on the Drawing

Check a wall length, trace a room perimeter, or measure a floor area directly on the plan. Choose the tool that fits the shape you need to measure.

  • Measure between two points with Distance.
  • Trace multiple points with Perimeter.
  • Measure polygon and circular areas.

Set the Scale to Match the Drawing

Use an embedded scale ratio when one is present, or calibrate against a known dimension. Check each sheet before applying one scale across a drawing set.

  • Set the actual length and unit for a known line.
  • Store the scale on the current page.
  • Apply it to all pages when they share the same scale.

Place Measurement Points Precisely

Choose snapping options in the Format tab to align measurement points with paths in the drawing. Review measurement information in the lower-left corner of the document pane.

  • Snap to endpoints, midpoints, paths, and intersections.
  • Review real distance, angle, and position where shown.
  • Add labels to identify measurement markups.

Export Measurements for Takeoff Reports

Carry your measurement information into a spreadsheet for your next reporting step. Foxit's Export to Excel command saves the PDF's measurement information as a CSV file.

  • Keep measurement markups with the source drawing.
  • Export the document's measurement information together.
  • Open the CSV in Excel or another compatible spreadsheet app.

Frequently asked questions

Get Answers Before You Measure

What can I measure in a PDF drawing?

You can measure distance, perimeter, polygon area, and circular area. Foxit PDF Editor for Windows adds Volume, Polylength, Diameter, Center Radius, 3 Point Radius, and Angle tools.

How do I set the scale for a PDF drawing?

Use the document's embedded scale when available, or calibrate a line with a known actual length. Enter the length and unit, then check the result against a known dimension. Apply one scale across pages only when those pages use the same scale.

Can I export PDF measurements to Excel?

Yes. Choose Export to Excel in the Format tab to save the PDF's measurement information as a CSV file. You can open that file in Excel or another compatible spreadsheet application.

Why can't I use the measure tools on my PDF?

The PDF must permit measuring. If the tools are unavailable, check the document's permissions or ask its creator for a version that allows measurement.

Can I use Foxit for takeoffs when switching from Bluebeam?

Foxit provides scale calibration, measurement markups, snapping, and CSV export for PDF-based takeoff work. Version 2026.2 for Windows adds measurement tools and improves compatibility with annotations from other PDF applications. Test your drawings and required measurement types during the trial to check the fit for your workflow.

Will snapping work on every PDF drawing?

Snapping uses the paths available in the PDF. A scanned image may not provide those paths. Check the source drawing and scale, and verify measurements against known dimensions before using the results.

Put Your PDF Measurements to Work
