AI Settings

The AI Settings dialog box is the central location to configure your AI Assistant experience. Use it to manage general preferences and response instructions, review credit usage, connect MCP services, enable or create AI Skills, and configure available AI models. Select a category from the left navigation to view and update its settings. To open the dialog box, take the AI Assistant within Foxit PDF Editor for Windows for example, click AI Assistant > AI Settings on the ribbon.

Your use of Foxit’s AI solutions is governed by Foxit AI User Guidelines. Foxit prioritizes privacy and security. You can click AI User Guidelines or Privacy Policy at the bottom left of the AI Settings dialog box anytime for more information.

General settings

The General page lets you provide profile information and response preferences that help personalize how the AI Assistant interacts with you. The page contains Profile and Instructions sections.

Set your profile

  1. Click AI Assistant > AI Settings to open the AI Settings dialog box.

  2. Select General in the dialog box.

  3. In the Profile section, enter the name you want the AI Assistant to use in the “What would you like us to call you?” field.

  4. Select your primary use case from the “Which role best matches your primary use case?” list. Examples includes Product Management, Engineering, Finance, and Marketing.

  5. Click Save to apply your changes or Cancel to discard them.

Add response instructions

Use the Instructions text box to enter short, explicit rules for how you want the AI Assistant to respond. For example, you can request concise answers by default or ask the AI Assistant to confirm before making broad product or architecture changes.

Tip: Enter instructions that describe response preferences and working rules rather than background facts. Keep the instructions clear and specific so they can be applied consistently.

Credit usage

The Usage page displays your AI Assistant plan and current credit usage.

  • Click AI Credit Usage Policy for more information about AI Assistant credit usage.

  • Review the Current section to confirm your assigned plan.

  • Check the “Credits Used this Month” value to see credits consumed during the current monthly period.

  • Note the reset date shown below the usage value to see when the monthly usage period resets.

AI models configuration

The Models page in the AI Settings dialog box lets you configure which AI models appear in the AI Assistant model picker in the chat box. Cloud models run in the cloud, On-Device models run locally, and Custom models connect to a self-hosted or third-party hosted model via an OpenAI-compatible API. Choose Cloud models when cloud processing meets your organization’s data-handling requirements. Use On-Device models to keep document content local. Use Custom models to control the endpoint and model used.

To configure AI models, select a source card (Cloud, On-Device, or Custom), and then configure the models for that source. The following steps are based on the AI Assistant within Foxit PDF Editor for Windows.

Configure Cloud AI models

  1. Click AI Assistant > AI Settings to open the AI Settings dialog box.

  2. Select Cloud on the Models page in the dialog box.

  3. Review the available models.

  4. Turn a model toggle on to make it available in the model picker in the chat box, or off to remove it.

Configure On-Device AI models (SLMs) (Editor Desktop only)

On-Device models are small language models (SLMs) that run locally through Microsoft Foundry. (Tip: Tasks that run on on‑device models are free and use no AI credits.)

Download an on-device model

  1. Click AI Assistant > AI Settings to open the AI Settings dialog box.

  2. Select On-Device on the Models page in the dialog box.

  3. Click Continue on the page to allow the required runtime component to download and wait for the process to finish.

  4. By default, no local model is available when you first enable On-Device models. Review the “Available to Download” models.

  5. Choose a model that matches your CPU or GPU hardware label.

  6. Click the download icon on the model row.

  7. Confirm the model appears in “Downloaded Models”. Use its toggle to enable or disable it, or click the trash icon to remove it.

Note: Local models require compatible hardware and sufficient storage. Download duration, model availability, and performance (including speed) depend on the device and the selected model.

Configure custom AI models (BYOM) (Editor Desktop only)

Custom models support Bring Your Own Model (BYOM) by connecting an OpenAI-compatible API endpoint. Use this option for a self-hosted model or models hosted by third parties.

Add a custom model

  1. Click AI Assistant > AI Settings to open the AI Settings dialog box.

  2. Select Custom on the Models page in the dialog box.

  3. Click Add Models on the page.

  4. Enter the required Base URL, API Key, Model identifier, and Display Name.

  5. Select Tools if the endpoint/model supports tool use and Vision if it supports image input.

  6. Select Add when the fields are valid or Cancel to discard the configuration.

Tip: Review generated content before using it in high-impact business, technical, legal, or security decisions.
