Use and manage AI skills

AI skills provide agents with pre-packaged, repeatable best practices and tools for specialized tasks. The AI Assistant in Editor includes preset skills for focused workflows such as summarizing, translating, preparing research, reviewing a PDF, creating a diagram, or inspecting PDF actions. You can also create custom skills to match your specific workflow.

To use a preset skill, follow the steps below which are based on the AI Assistant within Foxit PDF Editor for Windows.

  1. Open a document in Foxit PDF Editor if your task requires one.
  2. Click AI Assistant > AI Chat to open the AI Chat panel.
  3. Click the Add button in the chat box and choose Skills to open the Skills menu. (Directly entering “/” in the chat box also opens the Skills menu.)
  4. Review the available skills in the Skills menu and select the one that best matches your task. To learn more about a specific skill in the menu, visit the Skills page in AI Settings.
  5. Type a prompt describing your task requirements in the chat box and submit.

View and manage available skills

The Skills page in AI Settings is the central location to review available skills and control whether each skill is enabled.

  1. Click the Add button in the chat box, and choose Skills > Manage Skills, or select AI Settings from the AI Assistant tab and select Skills in the left navigation to open the Skills page.
  2. You can add new skills, and view skills from the Library and My Skills lists.  The Library shows preset skills and My Skills shows custom skills you added. Skills are displayed as cards.
  3. Each skill card displays the skill name, a short description, an enabled/disabled toggle, and update information.
  4. (Optional) You can use the toggle on a skill card to enable or disable the skill. For custom skills in My Skills, click the three‑dot icon on the card to download, edit, or delete the skill.
  5. Return to the Skills menu in the AI Assistant interface to select enabled skills for your task. Disabling a skill removes it from the Skills menu and prevents it from being selected.

Add a custom skill

Custom skills let you package a repeatable workflow for a specialized use case, team process, or document task. You can add a custom skill from the Skills page.

  1. Open the Skills page by clicking the Add button in the chat box and choosing Skills > Manage Skills, or by selecting AI Settings from the AI Assistant tab and selecting Skills in the left navigation.
  2. Click the New Skill button. Select Upload a skill to upload an existing skill or select Write skill instructions to create one manually.
  3. If you choose Write skill instructions, follow the screen instructions to complete the required fields: Skill Name, Description, and Instructions, and then click Add to create the skill.
  4. The new skill you added will appear in the My Skills list on the Skills page. Enable it if needed, and then select it from the Skills menu in the chat box when working on a relevant task.
