Foxit® Launches PhantomPDF™ 5.0, Unlocking the Power of PDF Creation

Enterprise-Class Feature Set Combines With Ease of Use to Deliver Benefits of PDF Creation to Home Offices, SMBs and Large Businesses; SDK Simplifies Custom Application Development

FREMONT, Calif. - May 26, 2011 - Foxit® Corporation, a leading provider of solutions for reading, editing, creating, organizing, and securing PDF documents, today launched Foxit PhantomPDF 5.0, a suite of tools that allows users to create professional PDF documents and forms quickly, affordably, and securely. Offering an extensive range of usability and power features, the suite is available in three editions that meet the requirements of consumers, home office workers, small and medium-sized businesses, and large enterprises for creating PDF-based documents.

Foxit PhantomPDF Express. Geared for consumers and business users, Foxit PhantomPDF Express helps users create standards-compliant PDF files from hundreds of file types, and at up to three times the speed of competitive tools.  Annotation features enable users to add comments, highlights, stamps, and other features to PDFs.

Foxit PhantomPDF Standard. Geared for all businesses, Foxit PhantomPDF Standard offers all the functionality and features of PhantomPDF Express, plus it enables users to edit content directly and to design and create PDF forms. Comprehensive security features safeguard documents through the use of passwords, certificate encryption, and digital signatures.

Foxit PhantomPDF Business. Geared for organizations with the need to meet regulatory requirements, Foxit PhantomPDF Business offers the functionality and features of PhantomPDF Standard, plus it provides additional security required for protection of documents and archives that need to meet compliance or corporate governance standards.

New capabilities provided in PhantomPDF 5.0 include:

Comprehensive Security. Foxit PhantomPDF 5.0 incorporates the extensive usage-control benefits of Microsoft®’s Active Directory® Rights Management Service (AD RMS), allowing the author to control document features within each PDF, such as who has permission to read, write, and print a file. Businesses can extend their existing AD RMS environment for Office® files to now support PDF documents.

Other security enhancements include redaction, which enables users to permanently remove, or redact, visible text and images from PDF documents. Document certification enables users to approve a PDF’s content and to specify the types of changes that are permitted for the PDF to remain certified.

XML Form Architecture (XFA) Form Filling. XFA form filling allows users to leverage existing XFA forms.

Productivity Enhancements. With Foxit PhantomPDF 5.0, users  can create PDF documents directly from Microsoft Word, PowerPoint®, and Excel® at the click of a single button, or can batch-create PDF documents from other common formats. The PDF/A Validation feature verifies that the document is compliant with the PDF/A-1a or PDF/A-1b regulations for long-term archiving. PhantomPDF 5.0 optimizes PDF documents to reduce their file size and compresses scanned documents. PhantomPDF also incorporates the user interface ribbon, making menu items quick and easy to find.

SDK Unlocks PDF Technology for Custom Development
For enterprises that wish to create custom extensions to their ability to read, create, edit, and design PDF documents and forms; and application developers wishing to tightly integrate their solutions into PDF environments, Foxit is also announcing the Foxit PhantomPDF Plug-in SDK, a software development kit that converts Foxit PhantomPDF and Reader 5.0 into platforms for delivering additional capabilities for PDF documents and forms.

The PhantomPDF Plug-in SDK allows developers to provide new menu items and toolbar buttons to the existing interface without modifying the PhantomPDF or Reader products. Developers can also create custom actions for their choice of user interface commands. In addition, they can manipulate PDF documents - for example, open a PDF in an external dialog, dynamically add or remove pages from an existing PDF, edit the elements in a PDF, or set up security policies to control user permissions for PDF documents.

Since PDF is an extensible format, the Plug-in SDK enables users to add custom data to the PDF file to support their specific workflows and business needs. For example, data on who has viewed the document, help information to fill out specific fields in a form, engineering costs, or other data not defined in the PDF specification can be added.

"We welcome the Foxit SDK as an opportunity to add additional rights-management features to PhantomPDF and the Foxit Reader, including the ability to restrict usage to specific users and to limit the number of times a document can be printed," said Sanford Bingham, president and CEO of FileOpen Systems, a digital rights management software provider. "FileOpen's partnership with Foxit will broaden our customers' options for PDF viewers."
